Let’s get to know each other
My life story? It’s pretty much the same as Voltron’s. I’m formed from five robot cats.
But the main thing you’ll learn about me is that editing is a passion. I want every project to succeed.

I’m Steve McCleary. Since 2015 I’ve been a writer helping shape the stories of Power Rangers in New Zealand, including on the 30th anniversary Netflix special, Once & Always. My experience on the show, working with other writers and producers on a daily basis, means I’m intimately familiar with both New Zealand and American spelling / grammar idiosyncrasies.
For many of those years I also handled ADR, meaning I went over every line of dialogue said by a monster or helmeted character to punch it up. Often this meant rewriting scenes from scratch when the script didn’t work on screen. This role that made me versatile with solutions, and adept at feeling out characters and how they talk.
I hold diplomas in Creative Writing and Editing, and am a published author of short stories and poetry. I’m on the University of Auckland’s list of approved proofreaders, and I’ve worked for multiple websites, including as a news editor for Microsoft and a social media producer for 1News. I was also a lead writer for an online advertising website run by Trade Me, eventually becoming the manager of its creative team for several years.
In my spare time I enjoy acting, voiceover work, and daydreaming about writing comic books. Oh, and each month I suit up as a commentator and ring announcer for pro wrestling events across NZ.
“He was supportive and kind, but also constructive when something didn’t work. He wouldn’t just tell me to revise a section without suggesting how to improve it. He had the patience to go over those parts until we were both happy. All along I felt that he cared about the project as much as I did.“
